Hi everyone! I am new to advising campus programming and I must say it is a
big job, but I absolutely love it! We are in the process of planning our
retreat so I would like to know if you have any great retreat suggestions for a CPB?

Also, I do not know how CPB's operate around the country but my board does
not specifically have a community service initiative, and this bothers me. So
we are in the process of trying to come up with something awesome for the
spring that we can do annually. Any suggestions? What are other boards doing
when it comes to community service?

Goodmorning, campus activities friends!

So, today is our board's start of 2010 - 2011 planning. We'll be meeting to discuss goals and objectives for this summer and for the course of the year. Lots of repeated tasks from last year... We have contracts to complete, timelines to set, budget details to work-out, office organization and orders to make, etc. You would think that a person would get bored of all of this, but the truth is that although there are a lot of repeats, there are a lot of chances to start anew: new student leaders, new challenges and more growth!

What are some challenges you face this upcoming academic year? How can you grow the most?

Our campus has also published and had approved a campus wide strategic plan that includes a goal of increasing late night activities by 15% over the next ten years. In addition to an assessment of current programs, are there any campuses that receive feedback, either through surveys or focus groups that to determine what programs your students want to see? Again if anyone would be willing to share ideas I would be grateful.

Educational Sessions: Who will be attending which ones? What topics should we be looking for? How do we show respect to presenters? How can we bring the information back to our programming board?

Showcases: How do these groups get picked to showcase? What kinds of acts are we looking for? What does our programming calendar look like for the next year? What about our budget? How do we show respect to the showcasing acts?

CAMP: How do we do business in CAMP? What kinds of questions should I be asking? What are those forms the agents ask us to fill out? How do I make the most of my time in the marketplace?

In addition, we'll cover topics such as travel safety, our expectations of them as a representative of our university, and our involvement in other programs such as Festival of Ideas.

What ideas do you have? Big or small, please share your ideas for raising money for student organizations.

PostSecret on your campus?

The student support group for survivors of sexual violence wants to coordinate a PostSecret program on campus. I understand that PostSecret is popular with college students, I am concerned about what happens if someone posts a secret such as "I was raped last night in the residence halls" or others that allude towards policy violations. Does your school have a PostSecret program or any ideas how these situations can be handled?

Office space for your students

We are very fortunate to have an office space for our programming board. Also who owns the name of the group, the students of the group the Beelzebub’s change from year to year as new students join the group and students graduate, we all know how that works. I know having worked in the music business in a former life when they sign a group they want those kids. So what would you do? Do you work out a deal before they go on the show, and maybe those universities did? I am just curious to hear people’s thoughts on this.

Students attending NACA conferences

I am curious how other advisors coordinate taking their students to the NACA conferences. In particular, do you require that your entire programming board attends, require that your exec board attends, or that attendance is not mandatory? I have had a terrible time getting my students interested in going to the regional NACA conference, and the only strategy I haven't used yet is making it required.

Structuring Your CAB

This is a question that has come up various times at our school: What's the best way to structure your CAB?

Is it better to have an executive board with chairs and committees? Or, is it better to have an executive board with a membership cap? Does it depend on the demographics of the community?

At our school, we have an executive board that consists of the President, VP of Internal Affairs, VP of External Affairs, Secretary, Treasurer, Marketing Coordinator and PR Coordinator. Following the E-Board is the board of Directors who head various events that are assigned to them, and then our 35 members who attend General Meetings and help out at events. The rationality behind the member cap is to be able focus our attention on our members and hold them accountable for their roles in the organization. This way, we are able to demonstrate that each member makes a significant difference and can grow to become a leader within and outside the organization. Also, it is important to note that we are a commuter school and recruitment proves to be challenging...
